The Canteen

Scheer Memorial Hospital is equipped with a nice little canteen on the second floor above what I believe is the physical therapy room. It is small but has indoor seating along with outdoor seating on the spacious balcony, which sits on the roof of the building below. It has a wonderful view of the campus and the fields and mountains beyond.

The canteen is the only means of eating out on the hospital campus and has a good selection of vegetarian cuisine, vegetarian because it is run by the Seventh-Day Adventists. Selections include boiled noodle soup (not far from Ramen noodles back home) with vegetables and boiled egg, veggie or mushroom spring rolls, bottomless dal bhat (the traditional Nepali meal of rice, lentils, and veggies), pizza (the pizza sauce turned out to be too-sweet when I tried it, kind of a let down) and momos (the Nepali version of a won-ton, served steamed or fried). They also have juice, water, tea, and snacks.

I have to say my favorite meal is the boiled noodles, but only on the days the "bland cook" is cooking, versus the "spicy cook". The recipes differ based on who is in the kitchen that day, so I may order boiled noodles one day and get something very tasty, and order the same thing the very next day and get something that sets my mouth on fire.

The people who work there are very nice and have already learned our names, particularly because we have started a tab and have come for bottles of water on numerous occasions already. We are still waiting for a tank of gas to be delivered so that we may boil our own water on our gas stove.

Overall, I am glad we have the canteen here so that if I ruin dinner or get tired of instant mashed potatoes, I can go to the safety of that nice little canteen up the road, not 3 minutes walk away. Another plus that it is open from 6am to 11pm. Good food, nice people, and a great view from the balcony. What a lifesaver...
